Digital
Photography?
By Tom Meinhold, Tom Meinhold Photography
What is all the fuss about digital photography, and why would I
want my photographer to photograph my wedding digital? Some say,
"The quality isn't as good as film" or "It's harder
to make good lasting prints from a digital file." If that were
true, you would not want your wedding photographed in this format.
However, I am here to tell you that the previous statements are
not true.
Many photographers/studios are converting completely or partially
to digital. You may be offered an exclusive digital package or the
option to add it on to your standard film package. Photography labs
across the country are installing direct to paper printers. These
printers take digital files and print them directly to Kodak photographic
paper. The end result is a photograph that looks, smells, and feels
like the old antiquated method of film. By the time this article
is published, we may already have available our own printing system
by Epson: an ink jet printer with photographic quality and a 200-year
shelf life.
If your photographer is providing you with proofs, the cost is
approximately $1.50 every time he or she clicks the shutter. With
digital photography, the cost is the same whether they take one
photograph or one thousand. This has allowed photographers to become
more creative. Another advantage is the opportunity to preview the
image on the back of the camera which allows the photographer to
see the results right away and make any necessary adjustments. With
film, you have to wait for the proofs to come back, and by then
if it doesn't look right, it is too late.
One of the many questions I get from clients is, "Will there
be CD readers 50 years from now?" I cannot believe there will
not be something out there that will be able to read your file for
a very long time. Color film negatives are made of a dye-based pigment,
and they will not last forever.
Furthermore, you do not need to be computer literate when choosing
a digital photographer. Let them do all the work, and enjoy your
memorable day. Digital photography can also preserve your magical
moments for a lifetime.
